Skydiving Equipment

Find skydiving parachutes and safety equipment

Skydiving is an exciting sport that challenges your courage and tests your ability to make important decisions in the blink of an eye. While you will have the opportunity to rent equipment whenever you go skydiving, you may want to invest in your own if you have a growing interest in the activity or take part in it frequently.

Safety is paramount when it comes to skydiving, so be sure only to purchase equipment from reputable vendors. If you want to try to save some money on used equipment, it's recommended that you test it out first in a safe simulated skydiving environment.

Must-Have Skydiving Equipment

Here are the major pieces of skydiving equipment you simply can't be without:

  • Skydiving parachutes. Typically, sky diving parachutes come compressed in small packs that fit easily over your back or clip around your waist. After you jump out of the airplane, you will enter a free-fall phase that allows you to experience the rush of plummeting through the air before pulling your ripcord and releasing your parachute.
  • Goggles. As you descend wind will be blowing hard against your face, and wind speeds at high altitudes tend to be stronger than near the surface of the Earth. Thus, skydiving goggles are an essential accessory as they protect your eyes from harm during a jump.
  • Helmets. If you activate your parachute too late, you may reach the ground before slowing down to an optimal velocity. In such a case, skydiving helmets can literally save your life, as they will absorb the impact of the blow and help prevent concussions and other potentially serious head injuries.

Tandem skydiving is a popular variation on the activity, in which two partners jump, free-fall and parachute safely back to ground level together. You'll need specialized equipment if you want to go tandem skydiving, particularly tandem parachutes. These have much larger surface areas and are designed to support the weight of multiple jumpers.

A word of caution: never skydive without professional supervision and adequate training. It can be an extremely dangerous activity and you should never take any unnecessary chances.
