Guide to women's clothes and fashion accessories
Women have long taken flack for their love of clothing and fashion. Many a joke has been made about the size of their closets, shoe collections, and shopping sprees. But all kidding aside, clothing is an essential item for women, men, and children alike, and women's clothes are often a way for them to express themselves and project a certain identity, whether that's high-powered professional or low-key soccer mom.
Whatever the wardrobe, there are a few essential items that should be in every woman's closet.
Dresses and Skirts
Even the most low-key woman needs a skirt or dress for special occasions -- weddings, funerals, parties, dinners out. The little black dress, commonly referred to as the LBD, has long been considered a staple of the woman's wardrobe.
Of course, there are numerous options beyond the little black dress, and many styles of little black dress to boot. Long-sleeved, short-sleeved, sleeveless, spaghetti-strapped, strapless ... lace, velvet, polyester, cotton, satin ... ankle length, tea length, knee length, short ... the list is virtually endless. Add in the variety of colors and patterns, and it's no wonder that most women opt to keep more than a single dress on hand, just in case!
Skirts also come in a variety of lengths, colors, patterns, and styles, and can be either completely casual or fairly formal. A loose cotton skirt can be a cool alternative to shorts on a summer's day, and a pinstripe pencil skirt looks great with a blazer in the boardroom. The added benefit of skirts is that they can be mixed and matched with tops for a variety of looks.
Like dresses and skirts, women's pants also come in a wide variety of styles, materials, colors, patterns, and lengths. Every woman has that favorite pair of sweatpants or pyjama bottoms perfect for lounging around the house, and the well-worn pair of jeans that's both comfortable and presentable.
In recent years, yoga pants, particularly by brands like lululemon, have become popular not just for yoga class or the gym, but as general casualwear.
And then, of course, there is a wide variety of dress pants for the office or those slightly more formal occasions. From basic black to the classic pinstripe to woollen plaids for the winter, the options here, too, go on and on.
For warmer weather, there are also shorts, capris, and pedal pushers to consider.
As if all of the variety in skirts and pants weren't enough, women need tops to go with them. Tank tops and t-shirts are great for working out or pairing with shorts or jeans as casualwear.
Professional women will want a variety of blouses to wear with their skirts and dress pants, as well as blazers, cardigans, and vests. Buying basic colors can help save money and effort by providing a variety of mix-and-match options, so that just a few pieces can create several different outfits. Basics also tend to weather fashion trends, so you won't have to buy new clothes every season.
Swimming, tanning, hottubbing, steambathing, and hanging at the beach all require that a woman has a bathing suit. Though the media would have us believe that bikinis are the only option, the reality is that bathing suits, too, come in a wide variety. Though slightly more limited in style and materials than clothing, bathing suits still offer a wide range, from modest one-pieces with skirts or shorts to barely-there string bikinis and thongs.
Once a woman has the perfect outfit, she needs to dress it up with jewelry and other accessories. Scarves, purses, belts, broaches, hair accessories, rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and watches all offer the chance to highlight an outfit or dress it up in a slightly different way. And let's not forget the shoes!
The clothes may make the man, but the accessories make the woman.
