How to have your hair looking great for less

Most women know that different types of hair require different hair care treatment. This means finding the product that’s right for the job. If you’ve got curly, out-of-control hair then you’ll want a de-frizzing serum. On the contrary, if you have extremely straight, flat hair then a volumizer is just what you need. If you’re unsure of what product to buy, start by learning what’s best for your hair type:

Dry Hair

You know you have dry hair if it is rough, frizzy, dull and has those dreaded split ends. Dry hair can be caused by a number of things, including excessive heat applications (blow-drying, flat ironing), coloring and sun exposure. There are also some people who just have naturally dry hair.

Dry hair screams for moisture - you want to look for a product such as a deep conditioner that will restore moisture back to the hair follicles. There are also some products designed especially for dry hair. One of the best, inexpensive conditioners for dry hair is Herbal Essences Replenishing Conditioner. This conditioner will restore moisture, softness and a healthy glow to your hair for a fraction of the cost of salon conditioners. For more intense treatment, you may want to try a hair mask, such as Keratase Masquintense. Packed with rich nutrients and moisturizing proteins, this salon-quality mask is a must for extremely dry hair.

Oily Hair

Oily hair is often described as greasy, shiny and generally very flat. It can give the appearance that your hair is dirty, even though it may have been freshly washed. Some individuals have hair that is just oily at the roots, while others experience oiliness all over. If your hair is just oily at the roots, it’s also entirely possible to have dry hair at the ends - this is referred to as combination hair.

You should be using a shampoo that is specifically designed for oily hair. Only apply conditioner to the ends of your hair and avoid combing your hair too frequently during the day, as this carries the oil from the scalp down through the rest of the hair. Aside from using a shampoo specifically for oily hair, you’ll want to use a cleanser like Neutrogena’s Anti-Residue Shampoo. Used once a week, it works by removing up to 95 percent of the built-up residue on your hair caused by shampoo, conditioner and styling products. Your hair will feel clean and free of residue. This product can be used on all hair types.

Colored Hair

People with colored hair typically have two general concerns - to retain their hair color and to restore the moisture that is lost during the coloring process. The good news is that many products designed for colored hair work to protect your hair color while preventing your hair from further damage. One of the best inexpensive shampoos for colored hair is Matrix’s Biolage Color Car Shampoo. It is a protective formula designed to condition and moisturize processed hair. The botanical extracts also help to preserve the radiance of your color treated hair.

Fine Hair

Fine hair means you have one of two things: very thin strands of hair or fewer hairs on the head overall. The result is that the hair appears very thin, flat and lifeless. The biggest difficulty for people with thin hair is gaining volume.

The best products for thin hair are volumizers. These products work by coating the hair, which makes it appear thicker and fuller. Styling gel and mousse can also help by giving the hair added lift and style. For example, Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic is a wheat-based, amino-acid building formula that will bring life and bounce back to your hair. Simply spritz the product onto the hair roots and blow dry.

I had a perminment hair color and about two or three weeks later I had a tight perm. My hair is very fine and thin. That's why I get the tight perms. After I had all this done to my hair, I have had a problem with dry, brittle hair with some breakage and fall out. What can I do to restore my hair back to a healthy state and maintain my perm ?

I have psoriasis and recently found a psoriasis shampoo free of sulphites. It was advertised in a health mag but I misplaced the ad and am having trouble finding any hair care products without the dreaded S additive. Please help. JCW from Alberta, Canada

My concern is that Im worried that in using Herbal Essences long term relationship Shampoo for LONG hair and then using Pantene Pro-V beautiful lengths 2in1 shampoo and conditioner I MAY have REALLY damaged my hair more. I read the ingredience. (Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate?) (Ammonium Laureth Sulfate?) is that like FERTILIZER?! seriously. My hair has felt between managable and BRITTLE! Like I CANNOT comb it through without recombing the same snarls or even putting my fingers through my hair and snapping it! I have auburn/red hair. LONG it IS FRIZZY ESPCIALLY in the humidity and rain. My hair is thick. I usually use Pantene. I actually got the shampoo Pantene red expressions for my red hair to enhance the color since I am 53 and getting some grey. I got it so I would NOT have to color my hair. It said it does not color hair just enhances the color without color hair. some wild cherry bark extract. I NEVER want to color my hair and NEVER have. Its all Natural red hair, NEVER colored. but I neeeeeed something that doesnt damage it. Seems these shampoos are making it brittle. Ps. I also heard about this wen? hair cleanser that Melissa Gilbert endorses? Is THAT stuff better? help. I LOVE my naturally auburn/red hair. Not many women can say they have naturally auburn/red hair cos MOST women color their hair. I never have. Thank you.
